Benefits

An Extreme Networks infrastructure provides the following benefits, allowing it to support Voiceover- IP (VoIP) traffic consistently and reliably:

High-Performance — Wire-speed switching at Layer 2 and Layer 3 ensures that the packet forwarding speed, whether it is for a data packet containing part of an e-mail or a VoIP packet containing part of a telephone conversation, will never be an obstacle to deploying VoIP on the local area network (LAN).

Low Latency — Extreme’s switches introduce 8-12 microseconds of latency, or delay, when forwarding a 64-byte Ethernet packet at Layer 2 or Layer 3. This is significantly less than the 150-300 milliseconds of delay that VoIP packets can tolerate.

Low Jitter — Jitter is a measure of the variation in latency over time; the challenge is to minimize jitter. Extreme’s switches exhibit an average jitter of 10 microseconds, a thousand times closer to 0 than what is required for a successful VoIP session.

Security — Extreme Networks implements denial of service (DoS) prevention in every switch.

Policy-Based QoS — Quality of service (QoS) enables enterprises and metro providers to seize revenue opportunities by using simpler, consistent end-to-end signaling like IP differentiated services (DiffServ), regardless of LAN and WAN or bridging and routing configurations. It also enables them to offer other incremental services and applications.

About Extreme Networks

Extreme Networks delivers the most effective applications and services infrastructure by creating networks that are faster, simpler and more costeffective. Located in Santa Clara, California, Extreme Networks markets its network switching solutions in more than 50 countries.

Founded in 1996, Extreme Networks shook up the industry by replacing complex software-based routers with simple, fast, highly intelligent, hardware-based switches. With this groundbreaking, simplified approach, Extreme stunned the competition and became an industry leader. While others are playing catch up, Extreme is driving toward the realization of Ethernet Everywhere: a unifying network strategy that uses proven Ethernet technology to strip complexity from every element of the network. Extreme is creating a future of easily deployed, highly scalable, intelligently managed, ubiquitous bandwidth for all networks, applications and users.

Extreme Networks switching solutions have received unprecedented industry recognition. The company has won more than 40 industry awards, including the prestigious “Best of Show” Awards for NetWorld+Interop five years consecutively (1997-2001). Other achievements include:

January, 2004 — SearchNetworking.com named, Extreme Networks' Summit 300-48
“Product of the Year”
January 19, 2004 — BlackDiamond 10K wins the “Networking Hardware of the Year” award from InfoWorld
